DID YOU KNOW?

Mesa Verde National Park sees approximately a half million visitors every year.

None of us want to hear or talk about increasing taxes, however, this year is different due to recently passed legislation which will allow fire protection districts in Colorado to ask for a sales tax to help support operational costs.

NOT JUST THE PROPERTY OWNERS…

Prior to 2024, fire protection districts in Colorado were limited on ways to generate revenue, the main revenue source was through property tax (mill levies). This was not fair since it put 100% of the financial burden on property owners, which did not spread the cost to everyone who utilizes the Cortez Fire Protection District’s services. The recent legislation has enabled districts to ask for a sales tax, which includes the non-residents, placing most of the financial burden on everyone who comes to the district who otherwise would not help with costs.

How much of a sales tax you ask? We have worked the numbers for our needs and less than one penny per dollar, or less than one dollar per $100 spent.

We plan to host several question and answer sessions over the next few months to assist with any questions you might have, so stay tuned for more information!

This November, we are considering asking for a local sales tax. For continued information, please visit our website www.cortezfire.com or visit one of our social media accounts on Facebook or Instagram.

Thank you.
