Mesothelioma
Wildfires can significantly increase the risk of asbestos exposure, especially in areas with older buildings that contain asbestos materials. When these structures burn, asbestos fibers can be released into the air, posing serious health risks to residents, first responders, and cleanup crews.
One of the most severe health conditions caused by asbestos exposure is mesothelioma, a type of cancer that affects the lining of the lungs, abdomen, or heart. Symptoms of mesothelioma can include:
Chest pain
Chronic cough
Shortness of breath
Nausea or vomiting
Rib painIt's important for people to be aware of these symptoms, especially after a wildfire, and seek medical assistance if they experience them.
